JOHN ELFORD | ADVANCED ADDICTION PRACTITIONER • AUTHOR • RECOVERY EDUCATOR

Understanding Addiction and
Building Lasting Recovery

For more than 20 years, I’ve worked with people affected by addiction, helping them understand what keeps them stuck and what needs to change. My approach is practical: I develop clear frameworks, teach recovery in a way people can use in everyday life, and create resources that turn understanding into action.

Recovery Is Something You Can Learn

Recovery can be taught, learned and strengthened. People need to understand what has happened, what keeps getting in the way of change, and what they can do differently. Everything you’ll find here—from the Quintiva Framework and Change Blockers to my books, courses and residential programmes—has been developed to make recovery easier to understand and, most importantly, easier to put into practice.

Somerton Lodge is my residential recovery centre on the Isle of Wight, where I bring together more than 20 years of professional practice, lived experience and recovery education. Guests can access medically supported detox through independent clinical partners, followed by the time, structure and practical learning needed to build lasting recovery.

This is where the Quintiva Framework, Change Blockers and Integrated Step Course move beyond books and ideas and become part of everyday recovery.

A place to stabilise, understand recovery and learn how to live it.

Explore The Quintiva Framework

Most approaches begin by trying to change the behaviour itself.

Quintiva begins by asking why that behaviour developed, what continues to drive it, and what may be preventing the person from changing.

By understanding and strengthening the six domains that influence how we think, feel, behave and live, recovery becomes more than simply stopping. It becomes something that can be understood, learned and strengthened over time.

Explore Change Blockers

Many approaches assume that people need more motivation, determination or willpower.

Quintiva looks beneath that assumption. It helps identify the less obvious barriers that make change difficult, even when someone genuinely wants to do things differently.

When those blockers are understood and properly addressed, change becomes easier to begin, more realistic to maintain and more likely to become part of everyday life.

Explore Five Minutes Of...

The 'Five Minutes Of' series grew out of my own experience and many years of listening to different styles of affirmations and guided meditations. I found some genuinely helpful, while others felt too long, complicated or difficult to connect with. I wanted to create something simple, accessible and easy to use in everyday life.

Each short session gives you an opportunity to pause, reset and refocus. Whether you have five minutes in the morning, during a difficult day or before going to sleep, these affirmations and meditations can help you quieten the mental noise, regain perspective and reconnect with yourself.

“My favourite is Five Minutes of Calm. It’s amazing what a difference just five minutes can make.”
— John Elford

The collection now includes Fifty Affirmations for a Fearless Life, Affirmations for Stopping Smoking, and a growing range of longer affirmations and meditations created to build confidence, calm the mind and support positive change.

Recovery Education in the Community

Alongside my creative work and the recovery education provided at Somerton Lodge, Get Into Recovery is the community expression of my mission to make recovery education accessible to everyone.

As a Community Interest Company (CIC), it delivers free workshops, peer support, wellbeing activities, professional training, and educational programmes that equip people with the knowledge, skills, and confidence to build lasting recovery.

My Mission

I believe recovery is not simply something people experience—it is something that can be taught and learned. My purpose is to make recovery education accessible by turning complex ideas into practical knowledge, skills, and frameworks that people can understand, apply, and use to build lasting change. Through education, lived experience, and evidence-informed practice, I aim to help people create healthier, more meaningful, and more resilient lives.
